Chapter 11

On the wrist-watch dial the hands read nine-ten. He was in a taxi riding downtown. Jutting above the front seat, the neck of the driver was a chunk of thick red beef under snow-white hair. The shoulders were wide and bulky, set there with a sort of obstinacy that went along with the mulelike progress of the taxi.

"Step on it," Darby said.

There was no sound from the front seat and the taxi wasn't going any faster.

"You hear me?" Darby said. "Let's get moving!"

Again the driver didn't reply, and it seemed now that he was purposely decreasing pressure on the accelerator.

"Hey, you." Darby leaned forward. "You got ears?"

"Easy, Jack." The driver had a voice like falling rocks rumbling. "Just take it easy."

"Easy, nothing. I'm in a hurry."

"Sorry, Jack. I can't help you. I'm driving with chains."
